Resumo

Há até pouco mais de 10 anos, médicos aconselhavam mulheres com transtorno bipolar a não terem filhos. Apesar desse pensamento ser agora ultrapassado, elas ainda enfrentam decisões, muitas vezes difíceis, sobre como lidar com seu tratamento durante a gravidez. A maioria das drogas prescritas para o transtorno bipolar estão associadas a algum risco de malformações congênitas, mas as pacientes que interrompem a medicação têm um alto risco de recaída de um episódio depressivo, maníaco ou misto. Durante o período puerperal, a taxa de recaída é ainda maior, chegando a 50% a 70%, segundo algumas estimativas. E mais alarmante ainda: mulheres com transtorno bipolar têm um risco 100 vezes maior do que outras mulheres de desenvolverem psicose pós-parto, uma condição grave que pode resultar em suicídio materno e infanticídio.
