The Brazilian Association of Psychiatry – ABP provides the guidance booklet “Suicidal Behavior: Knowing to Prevent” for press professionals. The role of the press is fundamental in this effort in defense of life. In the last years,
articles that guided the population about mental illness contributed to the suicide prevention campaign, since approximately 100% of registered suicide cases are associated with a history of mental illness. the correct information
aimed at the population is very important to guide and prevent suicide. Therefore, we launched this updated edition of the booklet “Suicidal Behavior: Knowing to Prevent”, to contribute to the work of journalists with updated and revised numbers on suicide in Brazil and in the world, based on data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health. In the last eight years, we carried out many actions that complement this work. In 2014, we launched, in partnership with the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), the booklet “Suicide Informing to Prevent”, which is aimed at health professionals, to guide them on suicidal ideation, risk factors, assessment, approach, care and treatment of patients at risk of suicide. The booklet was a great success and is available in pdf on the campaign's website. The ABP also brought to Brazil the international Yellow September campaign, which aims to prevent suicide, joining forces throughout the month, September 10 is officially the World Suicide Prevention Day. We advise on mental illness, disseminate messages of support and carry out scientific and cultural activities that serve the population. This is one of our missions, thank you for being part of it. Life is the best choice!
