Sleep disorders are present in the cardinal symptoms of several mental illnesses: depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, among others. According to the article "Sleep in psychiatric disorders", published in the Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria - RBP, a survey carried out in American cities showed that 40% of respondents who reported insomnia and 46.5% of those who reported hypersomnia met the criteria for mental disorders. Still according to the article, the most frequent complaints of patients affected by mental illness are related to the difficulty of falling asleep and also of staying asleep, in addition to the absence of "restorative sleep", which can be observed in most disorders.
