It is estimated that there are around 2 million borderline personality disorder sufferers in Brazil, which makes this a very common disorder, although little talked about and understood. Borderline is mainly characterized by instability and hypersensitivity in relationships, instability in self-image, extreme mood swings and impulsivity, in addition to fear of abandonment. This true roller coaster of emotions makes the disorder one of the most harmful, as patients have difficulty controlling their anger and may end up taking it out on violence - whether it be self-mutilation or aggression towards others. Statistics also show that around 10% of borderline personality disorder sufferers end up committing suicide. How is the disease diagnosed? What are the most current treatments? How to give a good quality of life to the patient? What do psychiatrists need to know about the disorder?
