I know this topic is a little scary and not everyone wants to talk about it. But I came to talk to you and tell you that this is a normal matter. Throw away your prejudice, because diseases of the mind, like heart, kidney or endocrine diseases, are treatable. The doctor who takes care of mental illness is the psychiatrist. Like the other doctors, he has a medical degree and specializes in psychiatry through medical residency or has a specialist title from the ABP/AMB. Consultation with a psychiatrist is like any other. An interview is made about the symptoms and, if the doctor deems it necessary, he will request clinical exams and indicate the treatment, which can be pharmacological or psychotherapeutic. It all depends on the patient's condition. There are many mental illnesses and for each one there is an adequate treatment, whether for depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, chemical dependency, among others. But it is important to emphasize that there are effective treatments. If you are bothered by your thoughts, feelings or behavior, it is essential that you see a psychiatrist to seek information. With proper treatment you can greatly improve your quality of life. Mental illness is not a sentence. There are effective treatments.
