In addition to the well-known physical illnesses caused by smoking, such as cardiovascular and lung problems, smoking can also cause mental disorders. According to studies, early contact with nicotine can modify brain structures and make adults more likely to develop anxiety, panic disorders, depression and even suicidal thoughts. On the one hand, there is a belief that psychiatric patients smoke more than other smokers precisely because they find cigarettes a kind of escape valve or a form of relaxation. On the other hand, it is believed that the path is the opposite: cigarette dependence is a predisposition to the emergence of mental illnesses.
