Ao longo dos últimos anos, especialmente na última década, a avaliação de diversas abordagens psicoterápicas foi incluída na agenda de pesquisa do transtorno bipolar (TB) do humor. Se até o final da década de 90 existiam pouco mais de dois estudos controlados publicados na literatura, apenas nos últimos dois anos foram publicados ao menos 12 ensaios clínicos com utilização de grupo controle. Este grande crescimento pode ser explicado pela mudança de visão que se tinha em relação ao TB, que passou a considerar a presença de sintomatologia residual fora de episódios de humor (Judd et al., 2002), o enorme impacto na vida funcional dos indivíduos (Magliano et al., 2009) e o próprio custo social atribuível a doença (Fajutrao et al., 2009). Somado a isso, estudos recentes têm demonstrado que quanto maior o número de episódios de humor pior a resposta destes pacientes (Pacchiarotti et al., 2011) ao tratamento medicamentoso. Desta forma, novos esforços foram empregados no sentido de aumentar o período de remissão da doença e de melhorar o manejo de sintomas e problemas relacionados a ela. Dentro deste contexto, o uso de abordagens estruturadas que se destinam especificamente ao tratamento do TB começaram a ser desenvolvidas.
