Mental retardation, mental disordersAbstract
Mental retardation (MR) is a condition with an extremely heterogeneous etiology, collectively defined as adaptive and intellectual functioning below the average, with onset before 18 years of age. Several mental disorders are more common in this group than in the general population. Even though the disorders present in subjects with MR are essentially the same, their clinical presentation may vary depending on the personal contingencies and language skills of the individual affected, which may mask the behavioral symptoms easily observed.
