Postpartum depression, risk factors, mode of deliveryAbstract
Postpartum depression affects about 12% of new mothers. Even though it is recognized by practitioners, the cause of postpartum depression remains unknown. Many risk factors are associated with the condition, including lack of support from the family, unintended pregnancy, low socioeconomic status, low education level, depression during pregnancy, and history of mental disease. Conversely, it is not well established whether mode of delivery is a facilitator for the development of postpartum depression. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of Cesarean sections is considered very high in Brazil. The WHO considersas acceptable a Cesarean rate of 15%; in Brazil, the rate reaches 45%. The international literature is inconsistent in determining whether mode of delivery is a risk factor for postpartum depression, and few Brazilian articles have addressed the topic.
