Abstract: Bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) is a complex group of chronic disorders that may, in its subcategory, course with bipolar I type, condition characterized by the presence of a manic episode associated with increased energy or activity and high, expansive or irritable mood, in addition to other signs and symptoms, and infrequently associated with pseudocyesis. The use of the herbal stimulant known as "peruvian maca" (derived from the tuber Lepidium meyenii) has effects on mood, affection and libido, and adverse effects and interactions with other medications may occur. This article presents the case report of a woman who underwent hospitalization in the psychiatry ward at Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Marília (HC FAMEMA), with a previous diagnosis of BPAD who had an episode of mania with clinical pseudocyesis after using the peruvian maca psychostimulant.
