Abstract

Introduction: health professionals are constantly exposed to the death of patients in the most diverse services, but professional grief is far from being a well-developed topic in our midst, much less in terms of instruments for measuring this phenomenon. Objective: this research aimed to identify the initial validity evidence of the Brazilian version of the Professional Grief Overload Scale. Method: The scale originally from Portugal was previously adapted and, in this study, applied, together with the Brazilian version of the Depression, Anxiety Stress Scale, to 252 health professionals working in Intensive Care Units. Results: The results point to the adequacy of the scale in terms of factorial structure and internal consistency. Confirmatory Factor Analysis showed adequate adjustment indices for the original 4-factor model (χ2[251] = 181.955, p = 0.000; CFI = .90; TLI = .91; RMSEA = .04 [90% CI .00 - .02] SRMR = .09). Positive correlations were identified between professional grief overload factors and symptoms of depression and stress. Conclusion: These results indicate the possibility of using the scale in the Brazilian context.
