Cannabis sativa is the illicit drug most widely used during pregnancy, and recent advances in neurosciences have contributed to elucidate the role played by the endocannabinoid system in controlling emotions, mood, and memory. Development of the central nervous systemis susceptible to the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). As a result, fetal exposure to marijuana during ontogeny
is not a benign phenomenon and will affect the migration, proliferation and differentiation of neuronal cells. Moreover, this condition has subjective, social, and legal repercussions that affect the mother’s ability to care for her children. The aim of this study was to gather current information on the effects of the use of cannabis during human pregnancy and its effects on the mother’s ability to care for her children. The authors conclude that children of users present neurocognitive deficits related to the use of cannabis during pregnancy and show more depressive, attentional, and impulsive symptoms, in addition to learning difficulties.
