Eating disorders are associated with severe clinical and psychiatric problems, and are frequently underdiagnosed. In this context, the category eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS), even though highly prevalent, has received little attention. The present article describes the case of a patient diagnosed with EDNOS, more specifically pica, who ingested plastic bags in an attempt to lose weight. The patient’s medical history and the treatment adopted are described in detail. Unfortunately, revision of the EDNOS
category in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and StatisticalManual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) maintained the confusing, arbitrary nature of the diagnostic criteria, with little usefulness in clinical practice.
