Suicide is a public health problem that has economic, financial, and social impacts. It is the cause of death of approximately 1 million people per year in the world. The objectives of this study were to analyze and compare the epidemiological profile of suicide cases in Brazil vs. in the municipality of Barra do Garças, state of Mato Grosso, central-western Brazil, and to propose a more comprehensive epidemiological study of suicide risk in the state. The methodology employed was a literature review based on data from the Virtual Health Library (VHL). Original articles and review articles were selected. Suicide is currently the third leading cause of death in the country. There was an increase in the number of events between 2000 and 2012 in all age groups. The highest incidence occurs in the South Region of Brazil. In relation to gender, males show a higher prevalence of suicide. Social inequality is positively associated with suicide. The analysis of data from the municipality of Barra do Garças (MT) was consistent with the national profile, indicating a higher number of suicides among people with fewer years of schooling and with psychiatric illnesses, and, among females, a preference for the use of drugs.
