Prevenção primária em psiquiatria: possibilidade ou utopia?

Resumo

A psiquiatria é o ramo da medicina que se dedica ao estudo dos transtornos mentais, com o objetivo de diagnosticar, classificar, tratar e prevenir. Entretanto, diferentemente das outras áreas médicas, pensar em uma abordagem preventiva na psiquiatria é algo relativamente novo. Somente na década de 1970 é que começaram a ser implementadas as primeiras iniciativas de prevenção em saúde mental. Os primeiros esforços tiveram como foco indivíduos em risco para psicose. Nas últimas décadas, os principais avanços no campo preventivo dentro da psiquiatria se deram nas prevenções secundária e terciária. Entretanto, seria possível fazer prevenção primária em psiquiatria? As publicações parecem dizer que sim. Cerca de 1.000 estudos controlados já foram publicados sobre prevenção primária em psiquiatria, sendo a maior parte em crianças e adolescentes. Em geral, esses estudos mostraram a capacidade da prevenção de reduzir fatores de riscos para adoecimento psíquico, de fortalecer fatores protetores e de gerar um impacto econômico positivo. Além disso, embora em um número muito menor, esses trabalhos conseguiram demonstrar que estratégias preventivas também são capazes de diminuir a incidência de transtornos mentais comuns, como depressão e transtornos de ansiedade.
