Abstract

Social cognition is a topic of great interest in studying psychopathological phenomena in psychiatry. Although there has been a notable advance in research in the Brazilian context, the failure in data replication leads to the need for an alignment in the terminology of the concepts that govern the social functioning domain. This review briefly outlines the main concepts related to social functioning, subject to investigation and clinical management: social cognition, social skills, and social competence. This review concludes by highlighting current investigative methodological limitations and the need to develop a taxonomy of social cognition.
