Many people believe that chemical dependency is a mere addiction or even a lack of character, but it is actually a serious illness. Recognized as a disease by the World Health Organization - WHO, chemical dependency consists of serious physical and mental consequences brought about by the abuse of harmful substances to the body. These substances can be licit, such as alcohol, nicotine and medication, or illicit, such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, crack and other drugs.
According to the Ministry of Health, in 2021 alone, more than 400,000 people with mental and behavioral disorders due to drug and alcohol use were provided in the Unified Health System, the SUS. In terms of smoking, it is estimated that 3% of Brazilians are nicotine dependent and 443 people die each day as a result of the disease.
On today's ABP TV, we're going to be debating the mental health impacts of substance addiction.
