Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ( ADHD ) is widely recognized as a disorder of neurobiological etiology. However, ADHD’s etiologic basis is not yet fully recognized. Findings on the epidemiology of ADHD point to an increased prevalence of symptoms in relatives of ADHD patients. These results encouraged a lot of research on genetics of ADHD as well as research on the influences of pregnancy and even the family environment in the pathogenesis of ADHD. Epidemiological studies investigating patients with a distinct disorder and their relatives have become a useful tools to help better understanding of the genetic and environmental bases of multiple mental disorders. This article revises, unsystematically , some of the main findings on the etiology of ADHD , focusing more specifically on family-based studies. These findings may help as a basis for current understanding of family studies in ADHD , and assist researchers interested in genetic epidemiology and ADHD.
