Abstract

The new competency matrix for medical residency programs in psychiatry in Brazil, published on July 6, 2021, provides a deeper understanding of the skills to be acquired and expands the horizon of possibilities for theoretical and practical teaching and learning processes. However, this new competency matrix for Medical Residency in Psychiatry and respective practice areas left an exposed gap in the legislation: What is the best way to assess the competencies of future specialists during their training? Since there is still no legislation or consensus on the subject, we propose the discussion of models from four places in the world that have gone through similar processes in recent decades, and that have obtained satisfactory results. Thus, the objective of this article is to analyze these models of competence assessment in psychiatric residencies and to make future proposals for Brazil.
