The text deals with aspects of electroconvulsive therapy, a medical procedure used to treat serious psychiatric disorders. It is a continuation of the article published in January/February 2011 in this same Journal on the subject. It presents evidence of efficacy, warns about the required safety measures, discusses mechanisms of action and adverse effects, shows the flowchart recommended by regulatory agencies, the complications that may arise from its use and final recommendations.
