Introduction: Bipolar disorder has a major impact on the social, economic and emotional life of the patient. Although the population is aging very rapidly, there are few studies that investigate the specific characteristics of this disorder in this age group. Objective: The objective of this study is to review the characteristics of bipolar disorder in the elderly. Results: Bipolar disorder in the elderly has specific characteristics that are different from bipolar disorder in adults in several topics such as: epidemiology, clinical/diagnostic aspects, main comorbidities and treatment. Conclusion: It is necessary to recognize bipolar disorder in the elderly in an appropriate manner so that diagnosis and treatment can be carried out correctly.
