electroconvulsive therapy, ECTAbstract
Electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, is an excellent biological treatment indicated for various mental disorders, especially those in which there is an imminent risk of suicide and/or self- and hetero-aggression. It is one of the oldest and most controversial procedures in psychiatric practice. It is effective and safe for people with severe mental illness or for patients who are unable to use psychotropic drugs. Its controversy is not due to its safety or effectiveness, as these have already been relevantly proven, but rather to the idea that the treatment would alter the brain, changing the personality and character of the people who undergo it.
