Envejecimiento exitoso: aspectos psicosociales

Resumen

Desde la publicación del influyente artículo escrito por Rowe y Kahn, en 1987, en la revista Science, se ha vuelto a discutir el concepto de envejecimiento exitoso. Estos autores sugirieron que el envejecimiento saludable se caracterizaría por una baja probabilidad de enfermedad o discapacidad, una excelente capacidad cognitiva y funcional y un compromiso social sostenido. Este concepto ha sido criticado por varios autores, entre otras razones, por no incluir las adquisiciones positivas del envejecimiento (p. ej., resignación, resiliencia), así como las diferencias socioculturales en el concepto salud-enfermedad (Minkler y Fadem 2002; Torres, 2004). Entre los numerosos factores potencialmente relacionados con el envejecimiento exitoso, nos correspondía presentar trabajos de investigación recientes que discutían la importancia de los aspectos psicológicos asociados al mismo, o las estrategias preventivas que se podrían adoptar para evitar que síntomas o enfermedades mentales colaboren con el envejecimiento patológico. Consultando la base de datos MEDLINE, de 1994 a 2071, encontramos 115 artículos, utilizando las palabras clave “envejecimiento”, “envejecimiento exitoso”, “epidemiología”, “psicopatología” y “depresión”. De este total, se seleccionaron los artículos más relevantes y actuales como fuente de datos para esta revisión.
