Electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, remission and maintenanceAbstract
This paper reviews the theoretical bases and the empirical studies available on the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a maintenance therapy strategy after electroconvulsive therapy. Some psychiatric conditions show poor response to any type of treatment, including electroconvulsive therapy. The combined use of these two techniques has shown promising results, but more studies are needed to define the precise indications and effectiveness of this approach in terms of sustained therapeutic response.
