Abstract

Introduction: In recent years, gambling has become common in the sports world, facilitating access to sports betting and creating social challenges. The expansion of online betting sites has significantly increased the number of users, resulting in socioeconomic losses for many. However, the literature on this phenomenon remains limited. Objective: This study aims to review the impact of the growth of online betting sites and the emergence of new addictions. Methodology: A narrative review of news and publications on online sports betting was conducted, using Google Scholar, SciElo, LILACS and MEDLINE between November and December 2023. The keywords used were “Sports Betting,” “Gambling Disorder,” “Sports,” and “Addictive Behaviors.” Fourteen articles were included, covering observational cross-sectional studies, qualitative studies, systematic reviews, an empirical study, a population study, and a longitudinal study. Additionally, five studies from autonomous entities were analyzed. Results: The review revealed a significant expansion of online sports betting, driven by increased accessibility and platform incentives. Despite advancements in diagnosis, the precise definition of sports betting-related disorders remains insufficient. Discussion: The expansion of online sports betting reflects a technological advancement without adequate regulation. The lack of clear diagnostic criteria may lead to underestimating the problem. No reliable data were found on the damage caused to users. Conclusion: The number of users of online sports betting sites is growing, driven by platform strategies. There is an urgent need for more studies to better assess the global impact of this activity.
