Abstract

The Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric disease characterized by mood oscillations or mood cyclic changes. It is classified as Type I (one or more manic episodes), the most severe kind of the disease, and Type II (one or more hypomanic episodes). Its causes clinical variations between individuals, and the contributions may come from environmental, biological and genetic factors, epidemiologic varies among 1% to 2% of general population. The purpose of the present study was to perform a literature review on electronic data base approaching bipolar disorder with the role of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and molecular changes. Due to the high rate of patients affected and the various hypotheses studied by researchers to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the disease, this study is necessary in order to contribute to the understanding of it. It was conclude that, even though there are many studies relating polymorphisms to predisposition do bipolar disorder, the physiopathology of the disease was not elucidated completely yet, and additional researches are needed in order to help understanding its progression.
