Abstract

Introduction: Pharmacological treatment is essential, but not sufficient, in the management of schizophrenic patients. Psychoeducation focused on caregivers seeks to increase knowledge and change behaviors that generate burden. Objective: To evaluate the burden of caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and the efficacy of a psychoeducational group intervention. Methodology: In this study with a quasi-experimental design, 30 caregivers of patients treated at a psychiatric outpatient clinic were assessed. A demographic and clinical characterization questionnaire was used for both patients and caregivers. The Zarit Burden Interview was used to assess burden among caregivers, applied before and after the psychoeducational group intervention. Results: Among the caregivers, 73% (n = 21) were female, and 33% (n = 9) were the patients’ mothers. Mean age was 55.2±9.4 years, and analysis of years of schooling revealed that 43% (n = 12) had not finished elementary school (mean 4±2.5 years), 73% (n = 21) were formally employed, and 33% (n = 9) were housewives. It was also observed that 46.6% (n = 13) of the caregivers presented health problems and 70% (n = 21) informed that they were the only caregivers responsible for the patient. Moderate/severe burden was most prevalent, with significant differences before and after the intervention. Conclusion: The burden mentioned by the caregivers deserves a “closer look,” as well as an intervention so that they can share experiences and implement changes in their daily lives
