Introduction: Psychiatric disorders are multifactorial syndromes with high prevalence, being part of the 5 among the 10 main causes of disability in the world. In women, the most common disorders are mood disorders and anxiety disorders. Analyzing the gender factor, it is already known that women have more vulnerability factors for the occurrence of these disorders, sexuality being one of these. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to understand how the sexual experiences of women with severe psychiatric disorders hospitalized at the Santa Catarina Institute of Psychiatry (IPq/SC) are constitute. Method: The research was carried out through a qualitative method based on semi-structured interviews and with an analysis through dialectical hermeneutics, which interprets narratives based on social, cultural and historical determinations. Results: Interviews were collected from 22 women, most of them white, heterosexual and with complete high school. The most prevalent themes brought up by the participants concerned sexual abuse in childhood and / or adult life ; lack of self -esteem presented and enhanced during hospitalization ; and the carelessness of health professionals in relation to the sexuality of hospitalized women . The research showed that participants felt comfortable approaching the topic of sexuality, but did not talk about it with professionals. In addition , more than half of the sample reported having been sexually abused at some stage in their lives . Conclusion: The final understanding of the research is that the sexuality of women with psychiatric disorders involves several issues of social vulnerability, and should be further studied and addressed during comprehensive care.
