Suicide is a critical global public health issue that results in the loss of over 700,000 lives each year, with a notably high prevalence among young individuals. In Brazil, the average mortality rate attributed to suicide stands at approximately 5.23 per 100,000 inhabitants. Despite the publication of numerous guidelines for managing suicidal behavior, to date, there are no guidelines created based on the principles of evidence-based medicine that address the realities of suicidal behavior in Brazil.
The aim of this study is to provide foundational guidelines for the management of patients exhibiting suicidal behavior in Brazil. This project involved eleven distinguished Brazilian psychiatrists selected by the Emergency Psychiatry Commission of the Brazilian Psychiatric Association (ABP), recognized for their experience and expertise in both psychiatry and the management of psychiatric emergencies. The development of these guidelines was based on a thorough analysis of various scientific articles, selected after a preliminary examination of 5362 records. In this supplement, we sought to translate the three guideline articles and update, without altering their essence, the most clinically relevant information into Portuguese.
