Suicide is a serious public health problem with profound emotional, social and economic impacts. This article addresses three essential strategies to address this issue: postvention, prevention and mental health promotion. Postvention involves interventions following a suicide, offering support to those affected to mitigate trauma and prevent further cases. Psychological support programs and mutual help groups are effective in reducing the negative impact on families and communities. Prevention consists of identifying and reducing risk factors before suicide attempts. This includes risk screening, psychotherapeutic interventions, pharmacological treatment, and educational campaigns that promote awareness and reduce the stigma of mental disorders. Training health and education professionals is crucial for early detection and intervention. Mental health promotion aims to strengthen protective factors and improve psychological well-being. Effective public policies, access to quality mental health services and the creation of social and educational environments that promote resilience and emotional support are fundamental. Initiatives include emotional education programs in schools and community awareness campaigns. This article emphasizes the need for an integrated approach that combines postvention, prevention and promotion for the effective management of suicidal behavior, presenting evidence and recommendations for clinical practice and implementation in public health policies.
