Introduction: The use of electronic smoking devices among young people is increasing. Objective: To describe the relationship between e-cigarette use and mental health, more specifically focused on Generalized Anxiety Disorder, among medical students. Method: The Informed Consent Form (TCLE) was collected. Approval Research Ethics Committee (REC): Universidade de Ribeirão Preto, UNAERP, CAAE: 69249523.8.0000.5498. Opinion Number: 6.187.957. Observational study with a sample of 122 medical students, aged 18 to 50 years. The main analysis was the mental health and nicotine dependence of e-cigarette users, through data collection using a questionnaire with 28 questions, based on the Hamilton Anxiety Scale and the Fargeström Test. A descriptive analysis was performed. Logistic regression was also performed, with the use of electronic cigarettes as the dependent variable and the following independent variables: gender, previous psychiatric diagnosis, and anxiety symptoms. Results: Of the 122 students who answered the questionnaire, 66.39% were women and 73.33% had already had some psychiatric diagnosis. In addition, 31.96% of the total sample were smokers. Of these, 44.26% used electronic cigarettes. After logistic regression, we found that having a previous psychiatric diagnosis increased the chance of using electronic cigarettes (adjusted odds ratio = 3.29; 95% confidence interval: 1.17 - 9.23). Conclusion: The use of electronic cigarettes among medical students is associated with anxiety levels, highlighting users with a previous psychiatric diagnosis, which increases the chance of their use, requiring prevention and cessation, for better student health.
