This paper aims to address mental retardation and its early detection, once such process dictates prevention, as well as therapeutic approaches, rehabilitation and outcome. In Brazil, mental health progressive interest on the autistic continuum quest has been processed at the expense of detection and care to subjects who has mental retardation (much more ubiquitous). Autism cases detection has dramatically grown in USA (1996 - 2007). It cannot be said how much of this growth (or all of it) is due to real autism prevalence changes. Psychiatrists´ qualification (as well as other Health professionals´) lacks intimacy to such an assorted and heterogeneous clinical entity. There are few multidisciplinary centers currently focused on early detection and Health professional capacitation in Brazil on this field of knowledge.
