Abstract

A frequent and important subject with significant clinical implications is studied. Treatment interruptions is defined and is distinguished from psychotherapy abandonment. Psychic dynamism and defenses secondary to separation difficulties are stressed. Three case reports show the advantages of examining the real reasons for treatment interruption. The objective of this procedure is useful for the patient and the psychotherapist and its purpose is not to convince the patient not to quit treatment but to decrease the patient’s guilty feelings and give the psychotherapist the real value of his/her work, decreasing his/her abandonment feelings.
