Abstract

Eating disorders can be defined by eating-related dysfunctional behaviors that impair physical health and psychosocial functioning. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by low body weight, dietary restriction, fear of gaining weight, overvaluation of body weight and/or shape and body image disorder. Bulimia nervosa is characterized by the presence of recurrent episodes of binge eating, followed by inappropriate compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain and a self-evaluation unduly influenced by body shape or weight. The goals of psychotherapy in the treatment of eating disorders are to develop techniques to promote treatment adherence, improve the patient’s relationship with their body image, teach them how to control binge eating episodes, increase their self-esteem, improve interpersonal relationships, teach them how to functionally deal with intense emotions and modify the belief system associated with the development and maintenance of eating disorders. The present article describes the models of psychotherapy most widely tested in clinical studies for the treatment of eating disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy is considered the gold standard for the treatment of these clinical conditions, due to the high number of controlled studies that corroborate the evidence of good results obtained with this model of psychotherapy. Techniques implemented by interpersonal therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and mindful eating are also described.
