Therapeutic adherence in bipolar disorder

Adherence to therapy is a major problem in the treatment of chronic diseases. In bipolar disorder, non-adherence to therapy contributes to the gap between the efficacy and effectiveness of treatment for these patients. Lack of adherence to therapy is common in bipolar disorder, with studies demonstrating rates of up to 50% of non-adherence in American patients. Multiple factors have been associated with non-adherence in bipolar disorder. Among them, sociodemographic factors, attitudes toward the disease/treatment, and factors specifically related to treatment can be highlighted. Despite this, measuring non-adherence to therapy is a major challenge, with instruments that cannot guarantee good accuracy. Finally, the use of psychosocial interventions can improve therapeutic adherence in patients with bipolar disorder.
