TDAH (Transtorno do Déficit de Atenção/Hiperatividade) é um transtorno extremamente bem pesquisado e com validade superior a da maioria dos transtornos mentais e superior inclusive a de muitas condições médicas (AMA Council for Scientific Affairs, 1998 ). Segundo Thomas Insel, diretor do Instituto Nacional de Saúde Mental (NIMH) norte-americano, os sintomas e transtornos psiquiátricos “começam cedo na vida e são crônicos”. Evidências crescentes nos mostram que crianças em idade pré-escolar (entre 3 e 6 anos de idade) podem apresentar graves problemas de saúde mental, interferindo no seu desenvolvimento emocional. Dentre os transtornos psiquiátricos identificados na pré-escola, o Transtorno Opositivo Desafiador (TOD) e o Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção/Hiperatividade (TDAH) são os mais estudados. Os estudos sugerem que o diagnóstico psiquiátrico na pré-escola persiste na idade escolar e, portanto, justifica a necessidade da intervenção precoce. A persistência do diagnóstico foi relacionada a uma série de fatores, incluindo baixa coesão familiar, status sócio-econômico e eventos negativos de vida.
