Objectives: To assess the prevalence of tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, and motivation for smoking cessation among medical students at Universidade Federal do Acre (UFAC). Method: In this cross-sectional, observational, descriptive and analytical study, students were administered a questionnaire based on the Global Health Professions Student Survey, in addition to the Fagerström test. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20, Pearson’s chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Of the 186 students interviewed, 156 (83.9%) had never smoked, 171 were non-smokers, and 15 (8.1%) reported being smokers (with an average of 6.06 igarettes/day). The Fagerström test revealed a low dependence. The prevalence of exposure to secondhand smoke was 28.0%. Most respondents (59.7%) were male. Mean age was 24.24 years (standard deviation = 3.80 years), and the majority (87.1%) was aged between 20 and 30 years. Mean age at the first smoking attempt was 16.72 years. The use of other tobacco products was present in 7.0% (n = 13). More than half of the smokers (53.3%) had tried to quit smoking. Of these, 13.3% believed that they did not need professional help to quit tobacco smoking. Conclusion: The majority (99.5%) of respondents recognized smoking as a disease, and 90% of them considered their role model as non-smokers important for their patients and for society.
