Cannabis, pregnancy, postpartum periodAbstract
Cannabis is the illicit psychoactive substance most commonly used by pregnant women in Brazil and worldwide. Many studies have been published focusing on the health of the fetus and breastfeeding baby, but few have investigated the health of pregnant women and recent mothers who use cannabis. The new role as a mother and the challenges therein can be a protective factor for the cessation of drug use. However, for vulnerable women, it may constitute a risk favor for the maintenance of addiction. This paper reviews the literature to provide an overview on the use of cannabis by females, with emphasis on the particularities of the impact of such consumption during pregnancy and in the postpartum period, as well as on the interventions recommended when assisting and caring for these mothers.
