Transcranial magnetic stimulation: what should psychiatrists know?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, neuromodulation, major depressive disorderAbstract
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique with minimal adverse effects and few contraindications. The procedure has been used in the treatment of patients with depression, with proven therapeutic benefits as shown in studies conducted worldwide. The latest European guideline published on the topic, in 2014, assigns evidence level A (defined efficacy) to high-frequency repetitive TMS applied over the left prefrontal dorsolateral cortex of patients with depression. The technique was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of depression in 2008 and recognized in 2012 by Brazilian Council of Medicine as a valid medical procedure throughout the country.
