Abstract

Asperger’s syndrome is a disorder of the autism spectrum that causes impairment of social, verbal and nonverbal functioning as well as of cognitive and behavioral flexibility. The treatment of such characteristics with cognitive behavioral therapy-based social skills training programs aims at improving the quality of life and decreasing some psychiatric symptoms in these patients. The difficulties most commonly addressed include: 1) social comprehension; 2) social rules and interpersonal expectations; 3) reciprocal conversation; 4) use and interpretation of nonverbal communication; 5) self-control; 6) control of stereotyped behaviors and obsessive interests; and 7) making friends. This paper is a critical review of the literature.
