Abstract

Dysfunctional stress response can play a key role in some mental disorders. An increasing number of studies have demonstrated sex differences in the prevalence of stress-related disorders. In particular, women with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) present different negative outcomes whe compared to men in terms of brain function e neuroadaptative mechanisms. Alcohol consumption has been associated with subtle, long-term hypothalamic-hypophysis-adrenal (HPA) axis alterations, affecting the adaptive response of stress neuroregulatorycircuits. Future research in this field may positively influence the development of treatment strategies.
